Plexiglas ®

Opal white with l78 % light transmission. Durable, UV resistant with high rigidity and good outdoor properties. In extruded polymethylacrylate that can be hot-bended, drilled, sawn, glued, engraved, etc.

Properties *Rigid and highly stable. *Opal white *Water-resistant *High softening point *UV-protected *Heat malleable *High chemical resistance: withstands most fats, diluted acid solutions, oils and common bleaches, certain solvents and weak alkaline solutions.
Applications For bathrooms, greenhouses, fridges, windows, displays and shelving. Used when you want to reduce the amount of light somewhat.

Cleaning
Despite its rigidity, the product has soft outer material. Cleaning must therefore be done using mild agents such as soapy water and a soft cloth. Do not use a microfibre cloth as this can cause scratches in the glass. Wipe off the glass with a soft rag or chamois leather. Plexiglas has a limited chemical resistance, so never allow any type of cleaning agent to stay on the glass for more than 5 minutes. Oil splashes and heavily soiled glass must be cleaned with a mixture containing disinfectant, e.g. isopropyl alcohol.

Working, general *Secure the sheet firmly when working to prevent vibrations. *If holes have to be drilled, use a wood/metal drill bit with a 60° – 90° angled tip. Avoid pushing too hard. *Over-dimension the holes a millimetre or so to enable the installation to move during thermal expansion. *Cutting the panel shall be done using a fine-toothed handsaw or with a circular saw with an HSS steel cutting disc, max 40 m/s. *Always use gloves and protective eyewear when preparing the panels.

Machining and wet grinding The material can be worked with most wood and metal tools. Ensure the tool is sharp and work at a slow speed so that the material does not melt due to friction heat. Cool the material during the work with clean water or soapy water. Allow the protective film to stay in place to prevent the material being scratched or damaged.

Hot bending Use a hot air gun to first heat the interior area to be bent and then the exterior. Then bend the panel quickly along the heated line. Panels thicker than 3 mm need to be heated several times on each side prior to bending. The material reaches optimal plasticity at 160°C when a certain degree of resistance can be felt. If the material is too cold, the bending can result in fragility and if too warm, bubbling can occur.

Mechanical fastener Make the hole a few millimetres larger so that the installation can move during thermal expansion. Screws and rivets produce a permanent installation.

Gluing Can be glued using, among other things, Biltema's Multibond, 36-48252. De-grease all surfaces to be glued using methylated spirits, for example. When all the surfaces are fully dry, wait for at least 15 minutes, then apply the fixing compound. Allow the joint to harden, refer to the curing times on the fixing compound.
