Mountainbikes (MTB) – combining usefulness with fun

Buying a mountain bike – a guide

Rushing through the woods on a mountain bike can be challenging, muddy and sweaty - but also ridiculous fun. If you are going to buy your first MTB, it’s a good idea to do some homework so that you find the bike that is right for you. We’ll go through what you need to know in this guide.

Frame type – hardtail or full-suspension?

There are two types of frames for MTBs - hardtail and full-suspension. A hardtail is a frame that only has suspension shock absorbers on the front fork. A full-suspension bike, on the other hand, has suspension at the front and rear, which absorb shocks from the terrain. A hardtail usually weighs less than a full-suspension bike, which makes it easier to get around at speed. If you are going to cycle lighter terrain in the forest, a hardtail will usually do the job, but a full-suspension bike is recommended if you are going to cycle in more hilly areas or downhill.

Wheel size - 27.5 or 29 inches?

Choosing a wheel size can be tricky, because what exactly is the difference between 27.5 and 29 inch wheels? In general, mountain bikes with a smaller frame also have the smaller 27.5 inch wheels, and those with a slightly larger frame have the larger 29 inch wheels. A 29 inch wheel rolls a little easier and is therefore a good choice if who want to ride on longer trails, but they can still feel a bit clumsy riding in technical areas. 27.5-inch wheels accelerate faster and are therefore easier to handle when cycling downhill.

Material – carbon fibre or aluminium?

A mountain bike frame is usually made of carbon fibre or aluminium. The difference between the materials is the level of equipment. The quality of the brakes, gears and the suspension as well as the geometry and weight of the frame are factors that affect the price. The level of equipment you should choose depends on what you intend to use your bike for, how often and on what surface.

Size of MTBs

There are different sizes of mountain bike frames and the size you need is determined mainly by your height, but also your taste. We therefore recommend that you stop by one of our stores and test ride a few bikes before buying an MTB so that you know that you will be happy with your new bike.
