5 Tips for a Lighter Hiking Backpack

5 Tips for a Lighter Hiking Backpack

Are you planning to experience nature from the hiking trail this summer? Don’t forget to think before packing. The lighter the packing, the better your experience is likely to be. For the first few kilometres, when adventure is just around the corner and your legs are feeling strong, even a heavily packed backpack can feel easy to carry. But a while into the hike, that feeling can quickly disappear. Pack light and make the most of your trip – every gram counts.

1. Plan your packing

The weight of your pack is of course up to you. The equipment you need depends on the expected weather, the duration of the hike, and, of course, what personal gadgets the adventurer wants to bring along. It may feel unnecessary to write a packing list, but by planning your packing and writing down everything you want to take with you, you also create an overview and can more easily eliminate unnecessary stuff.

2. Prepare to be a little dirty

We all pack differently – some people always pack too much clothing, others too little. In nature, it’s okay to be a little dirty. Out in the fresh air, you can smell of sweat a little. Lighten the packing by wearing the same garment longer. When it’s time to camp for the day, it may be possible to air out the garments, or even rinse them in a stream and hang them out to dry over the nearest tree branch.

3. Embrace a spartan hygiene routine

Forget about things like shampoo, conditioner, and deodorant. On a hike, three hygiene items are usually sufficient: biodegradable soap, toothpaste, and wet wipes. Think about how much of each product you will use during your trip and store them in smaller jars or bottles. But remember not to leave any rubbish in nature. Always bring a small bag in which you can put used wipes and other waste.

4. Skip the tinned food

Tinned food is practical, but it’s also very heavy. If you spend a little more time on what food you will take with you, you can save several hundred grams. Focus on energy-rich foods that are lightweight, such as nuts, porridge, and different kinds of dried food. More seasoned hikers may choose to dry the food themselves, but you can also buy ready-to-use freeze-dried food.

5. Multifunctional is best

In our usually comfortable everyday life, it’s easy to forget that many gadgets can have several functions. A mug can serve as both a drinking glass and a soup bowl, you can make a pillow from clothing, and cutlery can be a used as frying spatula. You are only limited by your imagination!
